Host: David Wallner and Anne Katz (Our House)

Kelley McRae and Matt Castelein

This marvelous folk duo from Austin, Texas returns again to Our House for a second time. Kelley's powerful, lovely voice has been compared to Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin and Emmylou Harris. Her CDs The Wayside, Brighter Than The Blues and Easy on My Mind are full of heartache and hope, pain and redemption rooted in America's plains and prairies and small towns. Crystal clear harmonies and Matt's sharp-edged guitar work will make for a night to remember.

House Concert
Host: Mike and Carol

Michael Bell & Chris Powers

Mike and Chris come from different backgrounds but share a common musical interest, Bluegrass. Here's what Chris has to say about this show: “I know Michael Bell has been a little shy about pushing his original songs, but the music we are doing for this concert should be promoted as the Original Songs of Michael Bell (“The Lost Songs of Michael Bell”?). These are great songs with a wide variety of styles - intricate, profound, comical and topical. Much of the music we perform with Graminy are Mike’s instrumentals, with a song or two each set. But he has a backlog of excellent songwriting, which no one was getting to hear, so we started doing these duo shows as a side project. Mike plays guitar and sings, and I play mandolin and Irish banjo and sing harmonies. I wouldn’t be surprised if we pull out some instrumentals or some better-known pieces, but Mike’s songs will be the focus.”

Colin Gilmore

Colin Gilmore is everything you would expect him to be given his DNA (his dad is Jimmie Dale Gilmore), he's charming and handsome with a voice like an angel.  This will be a duo show with guitar  player Jay Bennett who adds depth and soul to the songs.  Last time was pretty great, I'm looking forward to having them back.

John Van Orman and Adam Helwin

John Van Orman and Adam Helwin are a newly formed duo whose singular sound is making its mark across the Hidden Valleys of Wisconsin. John supplies vocals, and plays an array of instruments, including 6- and 7-string guitars, hurdy-gurdy, harmonium, Anglo concertina, and ukulele. Adam provides lead and back-up vocals and plays guitar, bass, and harmonica.  Besides performing thoroughly researched traditional material, John and Adam are modern bards whose lyrics reflect both the humor and the pathos of human experience. And a couple of quotes that John has accrued through the years:
"...hard core folk..." (Minneapolis Star Tribune)
"On Saturday evening comes John Van Orman…As an award winner, folk center director, hurdy-gurdy player, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, instrument builder and world traveler, the man is a fabulous treasure-trove of all things folk-music oriented and a gifted performer as well." (Tom Irwin, The Illinois Times)

Jon Langford's Four Lost Souls

Another repeat performance, Jon Langford and the other Lost Souls (Bethany Thomas, Tawny Newsome and John Szymanski) return to the basement (and maybe the back yard) with their brand new self-titled Bloodshot release (out September 22).  The record was recorded in Muscle Shoals with legendary producer Norbert Putnam.  With that sort of talent going in, you know the end product will be amazing.

Curtis McMurtry

Curtis McMurtry released his sophomore record Hornet's Nest earlier this year, and it is easily one of 2017's best.  His show here in April was also one of my favorites.  He says he only has "sad songs and mean songs," it's simpler than that.  All he has are great songs.

Chastity Brown

Singer/songwriter Chastity Brown is one of the best folk/R&B artists from the Twin Cities. Her new album, Silhouette of Sirens, has gotten rave reviews from NPR and other music critics. She just completed a major tour of Europe in London, Rome, Dublin, Milan and other cities. She has toured with Ani Difranco and will be making a rare appearance in Madison at Our House.

Walter Salas-Humara/Jonathan Rundman

My eureka moment was my third show ever, a 2007 CD release show with Walter Salas-Humara's band the Silos.  I've been hosting shows ever since, and Walter has been playing them.  For this show he will be joined by Jonathan Rundman, who will also open.  Rundman, who released the epic 22 song Reservoir earlier this summer, still stands as the only person to bring a harmonium to the basement.

Peter Case

Peter Case has had a legendary career- rocker, folkie, bluesman, author- but he's not slowing down.  In fact, he's just getting better, his last visit to KHoRM was my favorite, a perfect balance of songs from his lengthy career and the stories that go with them.  Case remembers every show he's ever played and who he played with, and, believe me,  there's never been a dull moment.

David Greely

David Greely is one of the premier fiddlers in Cajun music, a four-time Grammy nominee, and a veteran of the Louisiana dance hall scene as well as concert and festival performances worldwide. He helped found the popular group Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, with whom he played and recorded for 23 years. David opens a window into Cajun home music, revealing a deeper and richer palate of sounds and moods than the familiar dance hall sound. He explores haunting minor keys, rousing reels, moving waltzes and hilarious ballads, revealing the lyrical content, the stories of the rich souls that taught him this music. His warm baritone voice and quick sense of humor draw his audiences into this world, across the generations and into the present.

Common Chord

"From folk to swing and lots in between!" Common Chord was formed originally as a duo in 2015 by singer/songwriters Michael Bryant and Tracy Jane Comer, and has now grown to five with the addition of Bruce Buttel (songwriter, guitar and vocals), Delores Jenison (backing vocals), and Faye Bruggink (clarinet and bass). Add in the instrumental skills of group founders Michael (guitar, bass, mandolin) and Tracy (guitar, viola/violin, cello, bass, hammered dulcimer, keys) plus their talents in arranging and composition, and you get uniquely rich, textured, and tasteful arrangements.
Common Chord's repertoire includes originals from the three writers in the group plus unique covers from the likes of Tom Waits, the Beatles, Robert Johnson, Cheryl Wheeler, and more, with flavors of folk, blues, swing, country, pop, and jazz. Their music has appeal to audiences of all ages. Their debut CD (self-titled) was released in January 2017.  www.commonchord.us
